Is It Time for a Refresh?

Here we are, a new year and a new decade! How exciting is that?! There’s something that feels so fresh about a new decade. It’s like the chance to reinvent yourself or your life in a new way. The opportunity to start something new or check off that long to-do list. For myself, 2020 felt like the perfect year to go down a new career path. New decade, new career! Yes! Whatever 2020 or this new decade means to you, I sincerely hope that all of your dreams come true.

Okay now let’s get to the real reason I’m here. Is it time to refresh your home? How long have you had that sofa? Is that cream rug looking not so cream anymore? Now that we are starting a new decade, I think it’s time we take a look at our spaces. I’m here to give you a few tips on how to refresh your home.

My 7 Tips for a Refresh Success

1.     Get rid of the clutter

My very first recommendation is that you remove the clutter. Throw out the pieces that you haven’t used or seen in the last year. Cluttered spaces make a room feel busy and suffocating. Removing these items will give your space the chance to breathe. And trust me it will feel like a breath of fresh air. Remember, less is more!

2.     Start by shopping in your own home

Okay so you just went through all of your items that you aren’t using anymore and tossed them. I’m sure it seems a bit odd of me to now suggest shopping in your own home. But now that the space is free of clutter, you can really take an inventory of what it is that you truly need to refresh the space. Sometimes that means revitalizing an old accessory that was once clutter and is now a fresh piece again. This doesn’t mean bringing back in all those things you were going to throw out, it just means bringing back in a couple of those items to reuse them in the proper place.

3.     Rearrange your furniture

Arranging and re-arranging your space is a surefire way to add a serious refresh. Please remember to be mindful when arranging your furniture though. Always keep in mind traffic flow and functionality. I’ll touch on space planning in another blog post.

4.     Touch up your walls

Paint can truly make the world of a difference. Adding a fresh coat will instantly revive your space. Give your trim a new paint job as well. We all know they can take a real beating over time!

5.     Add in a new rug

A new rug can have a powerful effect on any space, whether in the living room, dining room or bedroom. Rugs are often the starting off point to a design. A chance to pull new colour inspiration from. I love rugs, they are really one of my favourite things to purchase for a space. Check out my guide to buying the right rug for you here. For now, consider freshening up your space with a brand new one. Mmm feels good right?!

6.     Swap out those old throw pillows

An inexpensive option that will instantly refresh your space, is to swap out the old throw pillows and replace them with new ones. Pillows add so much interest and personality to a space. Head on over to your local Homesense and pick out a few new pillows for your living room or bedroom, and BAM you’ve got yourself practically a whole new space. Try it and see for yourself!

7.     Bring the outdoors in

What better way to refresh your space then bringing the outdoors in. Not only do plants look great and provide a feeling of comfort, but they also serve a purpose by improving the air quality in your home. Talk about a win, win! Now if you tend to forget to water your plants, (guilty!) try just adding a fresh bouquet of flowers to your living room or kitchen or bathroom, actually anywhere! You can never have too many flowers!
