A Bedroom That Went from Drab to Fab
Here we are with my first project blog post. I can’t hardly believe it! It’s been a dream of mine for so long to start my own interior design business and with its very own blog! Ah pinch me!
Up first, is a project that was very near and dear to my heart. Why, you ask? Well because it’s my very own bedroom! When my husband and I began renovations of our century old home, we started with the main floor (which I will show you at a later time). We tore down walls and installed a brand-new kitchen. The upstairs bedrooms were left untouched for some time. Bedrooms are often the last to be renovated. Which is too bad because we actually spend majority of our time in our bedroom, making it just as important as any other room in your home. Now that my bedroom is finally completed, I feel a sense of peace at night when I crawl into bed. It made living through the renovation SO worth it!
How We Went from Drab to Fab
First up on the bedroom renovation agenda was leveling up the flooring. I knew that I wanted to continue the hardwood flooring that we have on our main floor into the bedrooms. That meant that the floors needed to be levelled up. Thank you hubby for all your hard work!! If you own an old home, you know that the floors start to sag over time. Our home had quite the sag going on, so much so that you would feel a little tipsy getting out of bed in the morning.
Once the flooring, drywall and electrical work was all complete, (again thank you hubby) it was time to add the board and batten. Instead of just painting the drywall white, I wanted to really elevate the space and add that extra layer of interest. Like I said previously, our home is a century old home, so it was important that I keep some of that character. That’s why adding the board and batten felt so right. It allowed for that traditional style to really shine through. The trim work also provides a feeling of height in the space, which I love.
To offset the traditional style, I wanted to incorporate some modern touches to the space. I did this with the furniture and accessories. I believe a space should be mixed with more than one style so that it feels interesting and not boring. The rug, mirror, bench and table lamps really provide that modern-day flare!
The goal for our bedroom was to feel light, bright and airy. I achieved this by keeping with a neutral colour palette. I decided to paint the entire room in Simply White by Benjamin Moore. I love this colour because it has a really nice warm undertone to it. It pairs perfectly with the warm wood tones in the room as well. One of the biggest design challenges in the space was the pony wall. Pony walls are not my favourite, so I wanted to disguise this as much as possible, that is why I chose to paint everything in the same colour. I’m pretty sure it did the trick! See below for the not so beautiful before shot of the bedroom, or should we call it the Drab shot?
I hope you enjoyed my first ever project blog post! More to come…
