5 Reasons to Paint Your Walls White

White paint has been picking up steam in the world of interiors. More and more designers are leaning towards it now more than ever. Dare I say it’s the new grey? As a designer, I often find there is a lot of fear behind the words “white walls” from clients. There is usually a brief period of some serious coaxing and encouragement before the client eventually comes around. And let me tell you, they are always happy that they did!

Unfortunately, white paint has been given a bad rep over the years… there’s a misconception that your home will feel ‘hospital like’ or ‘sterile’ and this couldn’t be further from the truth! Keep in mind all of the colours that are added through furniture and accessories. These two things are more powerful than most realize. Gone are the days of white paint only being used on trim and cabinets! Today I’m giving you my top 5 reasons to paint your walls white.

1.     You can easily change up your accessories.

Do you get sick of your decor pretty quickly? I know I do! Having white walls allows you to add whatever colour of accessories your heart desires at a moments notice. It pairs well with any material and really allows your decor to pop!

2.     There’s many different shades of white.

Have you walked into your local paint store and looked at all the different shades of white? There’s so many! Some have cool undertones and some have warm undertones. Painting your walls white doesn’t mean that you’re going to have stark white walls, you have options!

3.     You can create contrast.

There’s nothing I love more than contrast, and it can easily be achieved with white walls. Pairing dark shades with white instantly creates a dynamic and interesting space. Picture dark cabinetry with a white backdrop, those cabinets are going to seriously steal the show!

4.     It makes the space feel bigger and brighter.

White reflects light making a space feel bigger and brighter. Darker colours make a room feel smaller as they are perceived by the eye as coming forward. White makes the space feel more inviting and welcoming. What more could you ask for!?

5.     It’s not going out of style.

Like the white tee or the little black dress, white isn’t going out of style, ever! It’s timeless, so you can rest assured knowing your walls will always be on trend and current.

Designer Tips:

1. Take note of what lightbulbs you have in your home. I recommend LED 3000k. It’s not too cold (blue) and not too warm (yellow). Having the wrong lightbulb will seriously change the colour of white you choose!

2. When painting your room white, use the same colour on your trim and ceiling but use different finishes. ie. eggshell for walls, satin for trim and flat for ceiling.

Well have I convinced you yet? Just because your walls are white doesn’t mean that your space will lack interest or feel sterile. In fact, I believe it to be the complete opposite. It creates a backdrop that really allows your beautiful pieces in your home to finally be noticed.
